Gainesville is primarily known for being home to the University of Florida, the fourth-largest university in the United States. With large levels of migration, much of it related to the University of Florida, the city of Gainesville holds more in common culturally with Central and Southern Florida than with the more isolated Northern rural parts of the state. The "New Urbanization" plan to revitalize run-down portions of the area between historic Downtown and the University of Florida is due to largely to gay and lesbian gentrification, and catalyzed a migration toward upper-level homes in the inner-city. The area immediately north of the University of Florida is also seeing active redevelopment.

Ocala is surrounded by some of the most beautiful horse farms in the world, the Silver Springs Attraction with its famous glass-bottom boats, and the Ocala National Forest. About an hour's drive to either coast or to the attractions in Orlando, Ocala enjoys a moderate climate, diverse economy and an excellent public education system.
